Ithaca College Bigs Club The IC Bigs club is a great group of students who volunteer their time, as they negotiate their busy college schedules, to support the One-to-One Big Brothers Big Sisters mission. IC Bigs have found a way to make an irreplaceable contribution to the BBBS program. Without the IC Bigs club, much of what we do in our agency would not be possible. IC Bigs spend quite a few Saturday per year with us, working the children in our Northside Saturday program. They provide a support to those children attending the program who are waiting for a Big, help to design and implement many of the fun and educational offerings at that program, and help us with many behind the scenes issues and tasks. IC Bigs also help us to have a presence of the Ithaca College campus, a very important role. Through their efforts, we are able to better recruit new Bigs for the program, learn about fun events and activities offered by Ithaca College, and keep the student body aware of all that The Ithaca Youth Bureau has to offer. IC Bigs also play a big role as a fundraising partner by helping with Bowl for Kids' Sake, and with their own fundraising ideas! Cornell Bigs Club The Cornell Bigs club is a another great group of students who volunteer their time, as they deal with the stresses of college life, to support the One-to-One Big Brothers Big Sisters mission. CU Bigs also plays a unique and irreplaceable role in the functioning of our agency. Just like the IC Bigs, without the CU Bigs club, much of what we do in our agency would not be possible. With IC Bigs attending about half of our Saturdays, CU Bigs is our other partner for those programs, with their volunteers staffing the other half of our afternoons with the waitlist children. They provide supportive friendship and fun to children attending the program who are waiting for a Big, help to design and implement the program days that they participate in, and help us with many behind the scenes issues and tasks. CU Bigs also help to recruit new Bigs for the program, keep us up to date on what the Cornell community has to offer, and inform the student body aware of all that The Ithaca Youth Bureau has to offer. CU Bigs also play a big role as a fundraising partner by helping with Bowl for Kids' Sake, and by running their own fundraiser in the fall, The CU BIgs Battle of the Bands! Cornell Center for Materials Research Twice during each college semester, The Cornell Center for Materials Research comes down to the IYB during our Northside Saturdays to do fun and educational science activities with our Littles. The children always look forward to those days, and although they think they've just had fun, they always learn something valuable in the process. CCMR has been working with us for years, and has done every activity for free, always glad to participate in any opportunity to enrich the lives of our children. Family Reading Partnership One of our favorite organizations is the Family Reading Partnership, and they have been very valuable partners for us as we have tried to incorporate a love of books into our efforts to support our matches. With help from the FRP, we have secured various grants to get Books and gift certificates from Ithaca's Buffalo Street Books into the hands of our matches. We even held a "best photo of matches with their books" contest that was a great success! The FRP has also helped us to add some great, literacy related activities into our Northside Saturdays, including a performance of Cal Walker and John Simon's "Read Along Songs", and a trip each year to the Annual FRP Book Fest! Ithaca League of Women Rollers The League of Women Rollers supports us by generously donating a portion of their proceeds from 1 bout each year. |
